Upright Column Steel Grades: Which 5 Grades Build a Safer Pallet Rack?

The steel grade behind a pallet rack upright decides how much weight the rack holds and how long it survives a humid warehouse. Most buyers spec the beam capacity and forget the column. That is a mistake. The upright carries the entire vertical load, and its yield strength sets the real limit.

Five grades show up most often in racking projects:

A1011 SS Gr 50 — a structural steel sheet with good formability. Easy to punch for teardrop holes, but slightly lower toughness than plate grades.

A572 Gr 50 — the North American workhorse. About 345 MPa yield, good weldability, and predictable behaviour under rack load cycles.

S355 (EN 10025) — the European standard equivalent. Specified on projects that must pass EU structural audits.

Q355B (GB/T 1591) — the Chinese grade matching S355. Common on export racks built in Asia and shipped worldwide.

Q235 / S235 — a lower-strength option for light-duty racks where budget wins over capacity.

Yield strength is the number that matters. Gr 50-class steel gives you about 345 MPa, roughly 50 ksi. A commercial-quality sheet at 235 MPa will buckle or yield sooner at the same bay height. For tall frames above 6 metres, the grade choice can change allowable load by 30 percent or more.

Hole-wall quality is the second factor. Roll-formed holes keep the material fibre intact, so the connector bears load across a clean shear surface. Drilled or torch-cut holes weaken the wall and concentrate stress at the edges.

Standard alignment matters for compliance. A buyer in Germany expects EN 10025 S355. A buyer in the US expects ASTM A572. A buyer in the Gulf often accepts Q355B with mill certificates. Matching the grade to the destination code avoids costly rejections at inspection.

Surface protection closes the loop. Galvanized Z180 or higher resists corrosion in cold stores and coastal warehouses where bare steel rusts within a season.

Choosing the right upright column steel grade is not a line item you trim to save cost. It is the difference between a rack that passes audit and one that fails under load.
